Demetrio González Hoy came to the United States from Puebla, Mexico, at the age of 14. As a new immigrant and English learner, he experienced firsthand the transformative power of public education and the difference that caring teachers can make in a student’s life. Those experiences inspired his commitment to ensuring that every child has access to strong schools, meaningful opportunities, and the support they need to succeed.

Demetrio began his career as an elementary school teacher in the West Contra Costa Unified School District, teaching second and third grade at Bayview Elementary School. His time in the classroom continues to shape his approach to public service: listen closely to educators and families, keep students at the center of every decision, and never lose sight of how policies affect the daily experiences of children in our schools.

Today, Demetrio works with educators and local teachers’ associations across Northern California, supporting teachers and school employees as they advocate for stronger schools, fair working conditions, and the resources students deserve. His professional experience has given him a broad perspective on the challenges facing public education and the strategies that help school districts build lasting partnerships with educators and communities.

Since joining the WCCUSD Board of Education, Demetrio has worked to bring that classroom experience and collaborative approach to the Board. He has served in leadership roles on the Board, represented WCCUSD in regional education organizations, and helped lead difficult conversations about student programs, district finances, educator recruitment and retention, school facilities, and the future of public education in West Contra Costa. Demetrio also serves as the President of the Contra Costa County School Boards Association.

Demetrio is also a husband to an incredible 2nd grade teacher and the proud father of two young daughters. For him, the work is deeply personal. He wants every family in WCCUSD to feel confident that their children are learning in schools where they are supported, challenged, safe, and given every opportunity to thrive.
